My plan was to write the next blog about the apartment upstairs that I rent to a lovely couple. However, shortly after I finished my last post, I spilled a glass of water on my laptop. It still is not working, and all of my pictures are trapped on it. That post will have to wait for later. Therefore, I thought that I would write about the coat rack/medal display that I made for my husband while we were still dating. You might have noticed it in the living room in my last post. Of course you might not have realized what it was.
For our second Christmas together, Douglas told me that he wanted a coat rack. I prefer to make my gifts when possible, so I started to think about how I could make a coat rack. I had these panels in my basement that used to partition the bedroom in the apartment upstairs.
I decided that painted and adorned with hooks, one of them could make an acceptable coat rack. My intention was to paint the whole piece, but then I decided to leave some of the wood. I am pleased with the two-tone look.
Because I had the paint left over from a previous project, the only materials I had to purchase were the hooks. I put on six hooks and spent less than $30 on them.
Douglas has happy with his coat rack. He has also used it to display a few of his more recent medals. He is a triathlete and runner, and he participates in many competitions every year. The medals on the rack are only some of the ones he has earned in the past two years.
Of course, we do use it to put coats on as well. Here is a picture of what the coat rack normally looks. We planned to attach it to the wall, but so far we have just propped it up against the wall. We do not have children, though, so if you do have children and plan to do something similar, I suggest that you attach it so that they cannot pull it down on their heads.

Thank you! I was really glad that he liked it. It is nice to be able to reuse something in a different way. It keeps things out of the landfills!
I love the two-tone look! I love anything up-cycled like that, and I even think it looks better as a coat rack than as it’s original use!!
It definitely looks better as a coat rack! The two-tone look was in deference to Douglas, who really loves that look. The upside was that it was a lot less work for me! Win-win.
