A Secret Revelation

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I have been dying to tell you this story for months. In fact, since March I have been aching to tell everyone what an amazing find I had scored, but the problem was that I had not yet obtained it physically. Then, Victoria wrote this post about her Craigslist find, and I wanted to cry. “It’s not fair! I want to share my amazing coup and I can’t.” So, I waited, because I too had found an amazing wardrobe on Craigslist, but I was not able to pick it up yet.

Ch…ch..ch.changes

Someone asked me recently if anyone has ever visited my house twice and found it exactly the same. The answer to that question would be no. Even Douglas rarely comes home to find things the same every day. I like change.

You might remember that I completely rearranged the second bedroom last fall and took it from looking like this…

…to looking like this.

Let There Be Light

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I am not God, but I was able to add a lot of light to my house this week. I accomplished that by asking Douglas to hang three light fixtures. It was that simple.

The good part was that there were thunderstorms again yesterday. I say that is a good thing for me, but it is bad for him. It meant that his workout was limited to a three-mile run and I was able to use him for house projects. In case you are wondering why a three-mile run is considered a short workout, he is training for his seventh Ironman this July.

We started in the dining room. We had planned to take this light fixture out since we moved in. Douglas hated it, and I did not like it at first. I must admit that it has grown on me. I particularly like how shiny it is when the light bounces off of it. However, it really is too big for this room.

Hanging Tight(s)….and Scarves

Last weekend I went to Burlington Coat Factory for the first time. Did you know that there are more than coats at Burlington Coat Factory? I had no idea, but I am sure that you, a much more experienced shopper than I, knew that. While my friends were shopping, I wandered the aisles looking at all of the things that tempted me and that I was not going to buy. Then, I saw these.

Banish the Bedroom Piles

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

To maintain organization, it helps if everything has a place. It is necessary to cull your possessions regularly, so that they do not take over your life. I know this, and yet somehow I still end up with this.

Messy bedroom

I sometimes struggle to put everything in its place every day. When I am stressed and tired at the end of the day, I often pile my clothes on the nearest piece of furniture rather than put them away.

New Year’s Mrs. Clean

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I arrived home from Venezuela on the 31st, right before midnight. (You can read about the trip here.) I was supposed to get in earlier, but several of my planes were delayed. I spent thirty five hours between the city of Mérida and home. Needless to say, I was not up for much when I got home. January first was a lazy day for my man and me. January second, I was faced with a mess. My suitcases were still unpacked on the dining room table and there were things everywhere. Douglas had done a lot of laundry after he got back from his parents, but most of the clothes were still sitting on the bed in the spare room. Before I could start any other projects, the house needed to be clean. It took two days, but finally our house is clean, and I feel much better. Now maybe I will be able to work on something more exciting! Here are the before and after pictures.

Well Planted

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I am well planted or situated in my home. My plants, on the other hand, are not doing so well. My luck with plants has been hit or miss. I had an apartment in the city that my plants loved. They were so lush that I started to believe that I had a fool-proof green thumb. Lately, they have not been doing so well. Several have been on the verge of dying for a while now. Here is what some of them looked like.

I Rent Therefore I Own

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

It is because there is a legal rental apartment in my house that I was able to purchase it. If I did not have the income from that apartment, I would not have been able to qualify for the loan. It has been a mixed blessing. For the most part, it has worked out well. I did have one bad tenant, but I learned my lesson. The last few tenants have been great. Both living spaces are accessed through the front door. The tenants’ apartment occupies the entire second floor.

Cape of Dreams April 2012

In the picture below, the door on the right is ours. The door at the top of the stairs opens into the hallway in the apartment upstairs. This is a current picture (September 28, 2012), but it does not look much different than it ever did. We have not done anything in the hallway, except to give the door at the top of the stairs a fresh coat of white paint.

Blinded

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

Monday, September 17 was Rosh Hashanah, and both Douglas and I had the day off. We used some of the gift certificates that we received as wedding gifts to purchase woven blinds for our house. We bought the Cali Cordless Woven Shade at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It is nice to have window treatments that match throughout the house. I like that they are natural and cordless, as well as easy to raise up and down. Below is the picture from their website (This is not my house!).
