Where In The World?

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

Both Douglas and I love maps, so it is only fitting that we hang one in a prominent place in our home. I had been looking for a frame big enough and cheap enough to hang the map I had, but in the end, I went with a map that did not need frame. If you are friends with me on Facebook or Twitter, you had a little preview last week.

Let There Be Light

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I am not God, but I was able to add a lot of light to my house this week. I accomplished that by asking Douglas to hang three light fixtures. It was that simple.

The good part was that there were thunderstorms again yesterday. I say that is a good thing for me, but it is bad for him. It meant that his workout was limited to a three-mile run and I was able to use him for house projects. In case you are wondering why a three-mile run is considered a short workout, he is training for his seventh Ironman this July.

We started in the dining room. We had planned to take this light fixture out since we moved in. Douglas hated it, and I did not like it at first. I must admit that it has grown on me. I particularly like how shiny it is when the light bounces off of it. However, it really is too big for this room.

A Tribute to Our Parents

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

Our living room has been devoid of family photographs since we moved in. I have been looking for a way to incorporate some for a while now. Last week, we took advantage of a rainy day to put up some mirrors and shelves. I put some photographs on the shelves but still wanted more. I also felt that the wall with the mirrors was lacking something. Empty wall space + need for photographs = new project for Douglas and Jessica. 🙂 I think that the wall looks much better now. What do you think?

There’s Something New in the Neighborhood…

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

…who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! Sorry, I seem to have a thing about referencing kitschy songs from the 80s the past couple of weeks. I promise that will stop soon.

However, there is something new in my neighborhood, more specifically, in my living room. One of the items on my project list was to replace the entertainment center that was in the corner. I look on Craigslist periodically, just to see if anything catches my eye, and on Monday night I saw a china cabinet that was the exact width that I was looking for. It would fit perfectly along that wall, giving me maximum storage while still allowing the curtain to hang down the side of the window.

She Got Hers….Here’s His

There has been a new addition to the living room.

Chaise lounge

You might remember that we got a new couch a couple of months ago. I searched for months before I found something that I liked within the price range I set. If you have not been following the blog for long, you can read about the story about how we got it and when we set it up. Here is a picture of the sofa in our living room.

Sit and Stay for a While

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

The new couch is FINALLY in place. If you have been following the blog, you might remember a post in November, “To Hell and Back, How We Got Our New Couch.” As soon as it arrived, I was ready to pitch the old sofa and begin using the “new” one. However, it was missing a couple of legs, so we could not sit on it until they were replaced. As always, this was a much more arduous process than one would imagine, and thus, we spent over a month with a large, unusable sofa taking up much of our living room. The OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in me had a very difficult time relaxing in such a visually chaotic setting, but finally, things are clean and orderly once again.

New Year’s Mrs. Clean

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I arrived home from Venezuela on the 31st, right before midnight. (You can read about the trip here.) I was supposed to get in earlier, but several of my planes were delayed. I spent thirty five hours between the city of Mérida and home. Needless to say, I was not up for much when I got home. January first was a lazy day for my man and me. January second, I was faced with a mess. My suitcases were still unpacked on the dining room table and there were things everywhere. Douglas had done a lot of laundry after he got back from his parents, but most of the clothes were still sitting on the bed in the spare room. Before I could start any other projects, the house needed to be clean. It took two days, but finally our house is clean, and I feel much better. Now maybe I will be able to work on something more exciting! Here are the before and after pictures.

To Hell and Back, One Couch’s Story

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

Douglas named this post. He was the one who picked up the couch. I did all of the searching and negotiating. The process was frustrating for both of us at different points, but I am happy with the new sofa.

DIY Fall Wreath

Update: This blog has moved! You can check out this post here.

I came up with this idea while on a walk with Douglas and Kahlua. We were surrounded by all of the fall foliage, and I wanted a way to capture some of it. It is possible that I have seen this done somewhere else, and I apologize in advance if anyone thinks that I stole their idea, but as far as I know I did not.

Wall of shelves

We received these shelves as wedding presents from my friends Brian and Jenny. I had been trying to figure out what to do with this wall behind the couch for a while. It is an awkward area because the wall has two depths. Currently, the couch is half on the wall and half six inches in front of it. Someday I would love to build a custom bookshelf, but that is not going to happen in the near future. So, when I saw these narrow floating shelves at Bed, Bath and Beyond, I decided to register for them. Here they are on the BB&B website.
