I made a similar thing with an end table cabinet thing that I got at a Salvation army Store. I attached a hook latch to the two front doors, and then cut a tidy cat sized hole in one door. There is room inside for the litter box (my dog loves the kitty krunchies), and his food bowl can either be on top of the table, or I may add a little shelf inside the cabinet for his food bowl.
I have plans for the kitty litter as well. It is currently in the guest room closet, but we pull it out if anyone come to visit which is a pain. I love your end table idea.
